Reasons for Heat Treating
 

• Increase the hardness so as to increase Resistance to wear or to enable the Steel withstand more service condition.

• Increase the toughness, that is to produce a steel having both a high tensile strength and good ductility, Enabling in to with stand high impact.

Steel is heated upto its hardening temperature and at that temperature material is held for a fixed time to soak the temperature then it is quenched in oil. Quenching is cooling the material rapidly from a temperature above the transformation temperature. After quenching the material is very hard and brittle. After that Cold Treatment is done to improve the microstructure further. To make the steel more ductile and to remove the internal stresses, it is tempered. Tempering consists of reheating the quenched material to a suitable temperature below the transformation temperature for an appropriate time and cooling back to room temperature.
